So I know this isn’t regarding androgyny, but I thought it would fit in well here anyways since it had to to with this post from last week.
I was browsing the Huffington Post this morning when I saw the headline “Kanye Wears Women’s Clothing To Fashion Week…” and so obviously I clicked on it. Essentially, I find it interesting that since the colour he is wearing is generally thought to be ‘feminine’, this is something worth writing a short article about. I know that the sweater itself is a women’s sweater, but if it were brown or black, I doubt his choice of clothing would’ve made a headline.
Now, to my point. I think it is really cool that Kanye is wearing whatever he feels like wearing because I think it is silly that certain colours are seemingly reserved only for women (in the sense that if a male wore any of these ‘feminine’ colours, he would be considered less masculine by many people). The double standard is annoying to me, that if women wear “boyfriend jeans”, blazers, bow-ties, and other such articles of clothing, it is accepted and normal.  But if a male wants to wear soft colours or paint his nails, it is not regarded in the same way.
Madonna was way ahead of the curve with her song “What it Feels Like for A Girl”:

Girls can wear jeans And cut their hair short Wear shirts and boots ‘Cause it’s OK to be a boy But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading ‘Cause you think that being a girl is degrading But secretly you’d love to know what it’s like Wouldn’t you What it feels like for a girl.

So with all of that being said, I encourage you to wear what you want, people!! And Kanye, keep doing what you’re doing, you’ve got a fantastic sense of style.

cool!

Not actually a Madonna quote, but a line she took from the ‘93 film Cement Garden, which is based on a book by Ian McEwan:
